Ingredients

For the Topping:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

For the Cake:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350F (175C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and set aside.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the 1/4 cup of butter for the topping. Add the brown sugar and stir until dissolved. Pour this mixture into the prepared cake pan, spreading it evenly.
  3. Arrange the apple slices over the brown sugar mixture in the cake pan.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  5. In a large bowl, beat the 1/2 cup of softened butter with the granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix just until combined.
  7. Pour the batter over the apple slices in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  9. Let the cake cool in the pan on a wire rack for about 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges of the cake to loosen it, then invert it onto a serving plate. Serve warm or at room temperature.
