- 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
For the Cake:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup milk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350F (175C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and set aside.
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the 1/4 cup of butter for the topping. Add the brown sugar and stir until dissolved. Pour this mixture into the prepared cake pan, spreading it evenly.
- Arrange the apple slices over the brown sugar mixture in the cake pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, beat the 1/2 cup of softened butter with the granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix just until combined.
- Pour the batter over the apple slices in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan on a wire rack for about 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges of the cake to loosen it, then invert it onto a serving plate. Serve warm or at room temperature.
