Tarte Tatin

A classic French upside-down caramelized apple tart that's sure to impress!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6-8 medium apples (Granny Smith or Golden Delicious), peeled, cored, and quartered
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • Flour, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375F (190C).
  2. In an ovenproof skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sugar and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture turns a golden caramel color, about 8-10 minutes.
  3. Arrange the apple quarters in the caramel in a circular pattern, with the rounded sides down. Continue to cook for about 5-7 minutes.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry to fit over the skillet. Carefully place the pastry over the apples, tucking the edges inside the skillet.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  6. Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes. Carefully invert the tart onto a serving plate.
  7. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of crme frache.
